Bastard Out of Carolina

Characterizing Characters (Bone, mama Anney, and Granny)

- Bone: Bone is covertly pegged as the odd duck, the odd one out while still remaining close and loved by the family that surrounds her. She shares no features with any of her immediate family. Granny describes Bone's differing characteristics as "none of us got those blue eyes, and no one but you got that blue-black hair. Lord, you were a strange thing! You were like a fat red-faced doll with all that black black hair." Bone is described as being a true Boatwright (family surname) and wishes to be just like her uncles. Bone describes her idolization of her uncles as "I followed [my uncles] around and stole things from them that they didn't really care about... I wanted most of all a knife like the ones they all carried."

- Mama AnneyBlonde hair
“Mama wore her hair cut short, curled, and bleached.”Hard worker“She’d work her hands to claws, her back to a shovel shape, her mouth to a bent and awkward smile - anything to deny what Greenville County wanted to name her.”“She got a reputation for an easy smile and a sharp tongue.”

- GrannyOld, stubborn lady
“Her wide face was seamed and spotted with freckles and long deep lines. Her hair was thing and gray and tied bak with one of the little black strings that game off a snuff pouch.” She tells lots of stories “Granny wouldn’t talk much about my real daddy except to curse his name, but she told me just about everything else. She would lean back in her chair and start reeling out story and memory, making no distinction between what she knew to be true and what she had only heard told.”
